This tool is popular for small-scale root crop harvesting with a walk-behind tractor. It will typically go “as deep as the soil has been worked” during the planting of the crop, and sifts a good portion of the soil through the round tines, leaving most of the tuber crop exposed. Works very well for Potatoes, Garlic, Beets, Turnips, Onions, small Carrots (on crops other than potatoes, do not drive the plow down the center of the row, or the center shank will damage the crop…go off to one side!). LONG Carrots and Sweet potatoes are challenging for this tool, as they can grow “down” so far that they can penetrate the “pan” at the bottom of the worked soil and the plow may clip the tips off.
ROOT PLOWS REQUIRE WHEEL WEIGHTS (and minimum 4" x 10" x 18" tires) TO BE EFFECTIVE. THE MORE WEIGHT THE BETTER.
REQUIRED ACCESSORIES:Tool carrier and draw bar are required to run the root plow. See link at right. Tool Carrier Kit (daileysfarmtools.com)
